Manchester City Council has the following markets: The Council operates local district markets, the Manchester Christmas market, a wholesale food market and various specialist markets throughout the year. We also manage the Market Rights for the City, where independent market operators apply to operate events via Licence.

The following markets operate within the City boundaries:

• Arndale Retail Market• Gorton Retail Market • Harpurhey Retail Market • Longsight Retail Market • Wythenshawe Retail Market • New Smithfield Wholesale Food Market – Night operation • New Smithfield Sunday Market and Car Boot Sale • Manchester Christmas Markets • Special Interest Markets – varies from year to year

• Various events within the City, in conjunction with the Events Team which are delivered in partnership with external operators (operated via a Market Rights Licence) • Market Rights Licence approval to trade for numerous independent market operations within the City

Here is the Council’s response to our Freedom of Information request:

Q: Do you allow stall holders at your markets to sell real fur? (including small items such as knitted hats with fur bobbles, or key rings with fur trims etc.

A:   We currently have a trader on the Christmas Market who is selling small fur items. As far as we are aware, these items meet with the current government guidance. To date, we have not received any other applications from traders to sell fur items.

Manchester Markets does not currently have a written policy which covers the sale of fur and skins.

The Council allows the sale of fur. They have asked to see our Fur Free Markets policy to consider.

Real fur is cruel and unnecessary. Please urge the Council to ban the sale of real fur on their markets and adopt the official Fur Free Markets policy by contacting Matthew Bennett, Head of Commissioning and Delivery, email: m.bennett1@manchester.gov.uk
